Departing from Goodland, an historic fishing village on the south end of Marco Island, we’ll explore the mangrove forests and barrier islands of the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
As we navigate this giant maze of islands, expect to see Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and an abundance of coastal birds—egrets, herons, eagles, osprey, and roseate spoonbills. Ocasionally we encounter manatees, sea turtles, jumping tarpon, or spotted eagle rays along the way, even bobcats and raccoons swimming between the mangrove keys.
Our beach stop brings us to one of the remote barrier islands, only accessible by boat, south of Marco Island. The barrier islands of the gulf are renowned for an abundance of rare shells like olives, alphabet cones, lace murex and the elusive junonia. Tide pools may reveal sea stars, horse conchs, sand dollars, lightning whelks—even octopus.
